Thanks to the German Embassy Beijing, and specifically to the initiative of Ms. Patricia Schetelig, we were able to send 103 kg wort of clothing (as well as some games and school supplies) to Meigu on August 5th. It will take about two weeks for the 16 bulky bags to reach Meigu, where local project coordinator Weishi will welcome them and then distribute their contents to needy families in Leyue. Look out for coming updates on clothing distribution! And thank you to those whose donated!

We still need Euro 1,860 for the Madunaida School! (posted May 3rd, 2008)
Finally! Pictures from the new Madunaida school buidling! The building lies right across from the old school structure and holds three classrooms for total 90 students. Madunaida suffered substantially from the heavy snowfalls, which hit south and southwest China this past February, and also damaged parts of the school. We are very thankful for any donations to help cover the remaining payments for the new school building as well the repairs.

Luoga Teacher Salaries (posted May 3rd, 2008)
Finally! In March 2008, Meigu county's education bureau agreed to pay the salaries of Jime Erbu and Jike Fuyi. This is a big success for Souleiada, as we supported the two teachers from April 2006-December 2007 and had been hoping for an official recognition for our efforts in Luoga. A big thank you goes to Ms. Margherita Carbonaro and Mr. Luca Vitali for supporting Jike Fuyi.

We need your support for the Madunaida School! (posted Oct.30th, 2007)
The three new classrooms for the Madunaida School have been built. Souleiada has already managed to raise 20,000 RMB of the total 50,000 RMB construction costs. We are now trying to raise the remaining 30,000 RMB as quickly as possible: Your help is needed! The good news is that the government in Meigu (education department) has already promised to support us and the school by providing blackboards, tables and chairs for all three classrooms.

Beijing-AltA to Support Souleiada School Construction Project (posted May 27th, 2007)
We are very pleased to announce that Beijing-based AltA, an organization dedicated to fun and fundraising, is now supporting Souleiada in realizing one of the two school construction projects planned for 2007/08. Luoga Village/Leyue and Madunaida Village/Lama are in desperate need of school buildings to accommodate their growing number of elementary students scheduled to start school this year.
AltA (http://beijing-aa.info) holds regular events around Beijing, bringing people from different walks of life together to donate money and raise awareness for projects catering to children in need. Thank you, AltA!
Please check this site for regular updates on AltA’s support for Souleiada’s children.
About the Souleiada School Construction Project
For 2007/2008 we are planning to build two schools at village level. Luoga village (Leyue community) used to have its own school. In 1996, a landslide killed 150 villagers and destroyed the school. The villagers of Luoga are illiterate but want to provide their children with a future. In 2005, they organized schoolbooks, tables and chairs, as well as the only two literate villagers - Jime Erbu and Jike Fuyi to serve as teachers for their children. Now the only thing they lack is a proper school building. In Madunaida village of Lama community, the community that borders directly on Leyue, parents are very progressive and wish to send all their children regardless of gender to school. The village school’s capacities are limited though, so that we wish to help all children attend class by building three extra classrooms on the existing school premises.

Souleiada still needs support for children and teachers!
Urgent: Support for Two Teachers in Leyue
Luoga Village/Leyue
Jime Erbu, the older of two Luoga teachers (in his late forties) is also the village’s accountant. He is the only villager (except for the younger teacher, Jike Fuyi) who can read and write, not only Chinese but also Yi language.
Required monthly salary: 300 RMB (30 Euro), of these 5 Euro management fee for bank transactions and currency fluctuation.
A note to those unfamiliar with Luoga village. A landslide in 1996 basically pulled half the village down into the valley. 150 people died in the mud masses, and many houses were destroyed, among them the Luoga school. Ever since this landslide the villagers have lived without a school, or schooling. All of them are illiterate. More than a year ago the villagers collectively decided that they had to do something about their children’s education. They asked for permission from the village council to use the village meeting house to hold classes, and asked the only two literate people among them Jime Erbu and Jike Yifu to act as teachers. Luoga is in many ways a special village in Leyue. The social structure is still intact, people help each other, and come up with joint solutions for common problems. Apart from the education problem they also solved the electricity issue by erecting a dangerous but functional generator (operated with cow dung), lines and wiring.
Bagu Village/Leyue
Zhang Honghong has a Chinese name but is Yi. He only received an elementary education. As the county government did not allocate enough teachers to handle Bagu village’s substantial group of elementary students, the village council decided to help itself and employ Zhang Honghong as an extra teacher.
Required monthly salary: 100 RMB (10 Euro), of these 5 Euro management fee for bank transactions and currency fluctuation.
Urgent: Support for Three Girls
Shen Wuguo (Guoji Tigumo)
- 21 years old.
- Oldest of three sisters (younger sisters Shen Tixin, 17 yrs. old and Shen Tishi, 15 yrs. old)
- Currently enrolled as second-year English Language student at Yibin College, Yibin, Sichuan Province
- Registered in Zhaojue County, Autonomous District of Da Liangshan, Nanping Prefecture, Tangmu Village (2nd unit)
- Shen Wuguo’s parents are divorced. Her father, Guoji Suore, now lives in Yuexi County, and her mother, Baqie Suni, in Zhaojue County of Da Liangshan. The parents’ separation and their respective physical illness are the reason why Shen Wuguo’s education (and that of her two younger sisters) is at stake.
- Due to the family’s hardships Wuguo, like her younger siblings, was forced to start schooling at a later age than usual. This explains why, despite her age, she is only in year 1 of her college education.
- Shen Wuguo’s mother is the relative of a personal friend of Olivia Kraef.
Schooling fees and living expenses:
For the current school year (2006/07), her relatives managed to raise the necessary 7,200 RMB.
As of the next school year (summer 2007-summer 2008), the required financial aid per year would be:
Total: 11,200 RMB (1120 Euro)
Of these: 6200 RMB schooling fees (a bit less than 2006/07)
400 RMB as monthly “pocket money” to cover living expenses (for 12 months: 4800 RMB)
200 RMB project management fee (used for bank transactions, fluctuations in currency, pictures, etc.)
It would be greatly appreciated if Shen Wuguo could receive support regarding her living expenses before summer next year.
Shen Wuguo is scheduled to graduate from university in 2010. (Total duration of her B.A. English program is 4 years, i.e. 2006 2010.)
What you can expect as a supporter of Shen Wuguo:
- Regular letters from the girl;
- Regular school progress reports
.
